Commissioned by Advantage West Midlands, a regional mapping exercise of social enterprise undertaken in 2008 shows that:
There are around 5,554 social enterprises in the region
Social enterprise supports around 156,456 jobs within the West Midlands
Social enterprise is responsible for generating around £5,694 million of the West Midlands’ trading income.

Social Enterprise West Midlands is the regional voice for the sector, and has a close working relationship with Advantage West Midlands, the regional development agency.
Support for sustainable Social Enterprise is one element of the Agency’s overall approach to improve the competitiveness and growth of existing businesses and encourage the creation of new business throughout the region.
AWM funds Social Enterprise West Midlands to promote the value of social enterprise to partners across the region and nationally and act as a policy advisory body to both itself, the West Midlands Enterprise Board and Business Link West Midlands.
