Welcome to Social Enterprise West Midlands’ Social Value section.
The advent of the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012 has opened up opportunities for social enterprises and social businesses to showcase the added value they deliver in local communities and the differences they can make socially, environmentally and economically.
Making the economic case for added value is essential. Social Enterprise West Midlands set out the benefits for the local economy in our The West Midlands Way Report specifically designed to inform Local Enterprise Partnerships and Public bodies of the value of the sector.
The Social Value Act
The Act began as a private members’ bill in 2010 championed by Chris White MP for Warwick and Leamington. The bill received cross-party support in parliament and the Act became live on January 31st 2013.
The Act asks public bodies to consider how they can improve the social, environmental and economic well-being of the communities they are commissioning for and how incorporating social value in their purchasing decisions and contracts can make the public pound go that much further.
- In February 2015 Lord Young led a review of the Social Value Act which you can view via here
- Chris White MP also looked at the Future of Social Value in an essay published in February 2015 which explores how its principles might be applied to the planning system to ensure developers are putting something back into the local community. Read it here
SEWM and our Social Value Agenda
SEWM work closely with the Office of Civil Society to support the social value agenda and help promote the benefits of working with social enterprises in service delivery.
We have held two extremely successful Social Value Conferences which featured a range of keynote speakers including Nick Hurd MP, Minister for Civil Society and Chris White MP, inspirational case studies, strategic speakers from local authority and public health, social enterprise exhibitors showcasing their products and services and over 500 delegates in attendance over the two conferences.
